The Beningbrough Singers is a Yorkshire
based singing group which was founded in 1985 to give a Christmas
carol concert at the National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall,
just north of York; a tradition that continued until 1998.
Past performances have included carol concerts for the National
Trust at East Riddlesden Hall in Keighley and the Treasurer’s
House in York, as well as concerts for Yorkshire Electricity,
Relate, the Jorvik Festival, the Woburn Parish Church Music
Festival, Sowerby Music, The Friends of York City Archive
and a number of parish churches in the City of York and around
Yorkshire including Hovingham, Crambe and Lastingham. They
sang the Palm Sunday services in Southwell Minster for the
years 2001 to 2004, and they are in demand to sing at weddings
and private functions. They aim to sing at one charity event
per year to support fund-raising for that charity. Concerts
of more major works have included the Requiem by Fauré,
the Requiem by John Rutter and the 1692 Ode on St. Cecilia’s
Day by Purcell. The group was led first by Andrew Carter for
two years, followed by David Turmeau until 1998, when he was
succeeded by David Howard.
The group sings mostly a capella (unacompanied)
music from the sacred and secular repertoire from early music
to the present day. During most concerts there will be items
for one or more voices with piano/organ accompaniment. The
male section enjoy singing male voice quartet music and most
concerts feature a "barbershop" section.
