David has played the keyboard (rather reluctantly to start
with!) since he was 5 years old, but soon became very keen
on it. Around the age of 15 he took up the organ and was able
to have lessons on the organ of Rochester Cathedral under
Gavin Williams and David Oldbury.
At university (University College London) whilst reading
for a degree in Electronical and Electronic Engineering, David
played the organ and sang in the University Church of Christ
the King in Gordon Square, London WC1 under the musical directorship
of Alan Wilson. There he played the organ in many of Britain's
cathedrals for choral evensong, choral mattins and choral
eucharists.
With Alan Wilson, David teamed up to form their Synthesizer
Duo. They played concerts of popular classical music on 8
or more keyboards, gave master classes at the Royal School
of Church Music, schools and other venues and were the first
to use synthesizers in a worship context on BBC Radio 2 (Sunday
Half Hour - 17th April 1988) and BBC Radio 4 (Daily Service
- 20th October 1989). David authored the RSCM handbook 11:
"Synthesisers in worship".
